12. Festival Politik im Freien Theater
Zum Thema „Grenzen“
The festival Politik im Freien Theater, hosted once every three years by the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (Federal Agency for Civic Education), will take place in Leipzig for the first time from 16 to 25 October 2025. The festival’s 12th edition will be developed in cooperation with the theatres LOFFT – DAS THEATER, Schaubühne Lindenfels, Schauspiel Leipzig, Theater der Jungen Welt and Westflügel Leipzig, focussing on the topic of “Borders”.
The festival presents 16 guest performances from the German-language region’s professional independent theatre scene. Following an open call, a jury of nine experts evaluated 455 independent theatre productions. One focus of the selection was to find plays that would also appeal to children and young people.

The theatre programme will be accompanied by a comprehensive programme of art, culture and discourse. In cooperation with numerous local and regional partners from art and education, diverse event formats will invite the audience to reflect on the topic of “Borders”. The extensive festival programme will be flanked by a devised project by Syndikat Gefährliche Liebschaften. Their project was commissioned by the festival and explores the surroundings of Leipzig.

Cooperation between the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) and Schauspiel Leipzig, LOFFT—DAS THEATER, Schaubühne Lindenfels, Theater der Jungen Welt, and Westflügel Leipzig
The 12th festival Politik im Freien Theater is funded by the City of Leipzig. The funding was made possible through the decision of the Leipzig City Council on submission VII-DS-06803 “12. Festival ‘Politik im Freien Theater’ 2025 in Leipzig”, and by the Saxonian State Ministry for Science, Culture and Tourism. This scheme is co-financed through tax revenue on the basis of the budget adopted by the Saxonian State Parliament.
