Residenz 2023/24
The performance productions in the Residence explore the possibilities of telling stories across genres with the means of theatre, dance, music theatre, visual arts, literature or even experiences from club culture. The venue in the former cotton mill is a special invitation to experience performative art directly, to discover experimental modes of presentation in theatre and to try out new forms of togetherness.
Artists from Germany and Europe spend several weeks at Residenz to work on their latest projects. During this time, Residenz becomes an artistic laboratory, a focussed and protected space for working up to the premiere. For the performance dates, Residenz turns into a theatre showing brand new, cutting-edge performance art. In this way, Schauspiel Leipzig closes a significant gap between the working methods and aesthetics of the independent scene, international festivals and city theatres.
At the beginning of the season, two projects undertake a post-colonial reappraisal of the past: One refers specifically to Leipzig’s most famous son, the other adopts a more global perspective with regards to current ecological issues. Another pair of productions looks at the question of how we wish to live together here and now from diametrical directions. “Handle with Care” (WT) explores the neighbourhood of Residenz to find out what the community’s common denominators may be, while two “goddesses” set out to find and use worthwhile attempts of living together. An evening of Dadaist songs celebrates the comedy of the absurd with great physicality while invisible bodies reveal secret lip service in a performative darkroom. A live podcast investigates an expanded notion of reality and radically inclusive visions while a series of salon evenings unsettles even such irrevocable certainties as the course of the four seasons. At the conclusion of the season, two pundits of the international performance scene enter the ring and dance what cannot be spoken about.
