John Moran (Dresden) / Artists in Residence
The works of US-American composer and choreographer John Moran consist of acutely precise series of gestures and movements, executed by the performers in complete synchronicity to a soundtrack of pre-recorded voices and sounds. This produces a form of ‘hyper-realism’ for the observer. With the aid of musical principles, everyday procedures and actions are deconstructed and interwoven in a way that makes human perception appear like a complexly composed symphony.

In “everyone”, together with three dancers, Moran explores the most universal gestures and rhythms of life, from birth to death. With a soundtrack of voices and noises generated by people from various parts of the world, wholly individual “choreographic portraits” emerge. They are arranged on stage according to the musical form of a fugue and reveal universal questions on the nature of human existence as a structured composition.

John Moran began his career in late 1980s New York. Philip Glass is considered his mentor and in his operas, he has worked with Uma Thurman, Iggy Pop and Allen Ginsberg. Since 2008, Moran has been producing his work mainly in Europe, creating intimate theatre miniatures like the solo performance “Etudes: Amsterdam” or the duet “John Moran… and his neighbor, Saori”. In 2017, he developed a new version of his opera “The Manson Family” at Festspielhaus HELLERAU in Dresden.
