BANG BANG

Manuel Roque (Montreal)
‘BANG BANG is torture’ explains Manuel Roque with irony. In any case, it's a case of onomatopoeia. Even in the title, you can hear the constant impact of feet in choreographic motifs, whose relentless repetition requires not only athleticism but also extreme concentration. The choreographer from Montreal even compares the dancers to ‘kamikaze pilots’. Originally, he himself flipped across the stage in this ‘personal and therefore universal ritual’, alone and so subtly intense that BANG BANG was voted piece of the year in Quebec, Canada. Today, two dancers expend themselves in it, rocking themselves into a state between gravity and weightlessness, martyrdom and ecstasy. Soon, the body becomes the only measure of all things and reveals its full resilience, while the figures transcend themselves and the human condition. And since the intensity of the moment and the fragility in the contest between fatigue and precision are now experienced in the solidarity of a duo, the music of Chopin and Debussy creates even more vulnerability, paired with beauty. BANG BANG reflects Roque's entire experience with Montreal's most important choreographers, one of the world's most exciting dance scenes. As its current shooting star, he constantly pushes the boundaries of dance and the body, making an artistic and social statement with each of his pieces. The poetic BANG BANG philosophically questions the meaning and absurdity of our existence.
