Three dance pieces by Angelin Preljocaj
//Final night
//Final night
This evening presents three choreographies by Angelin Preljocaj, one of France’s most important choreographers. They demonstrate this artist’s aesthetic diversity:
“Ghost” is an homage to Marius Petipa (1818-1910), founding father of classical ballet, on the occasion of his 200th birthday. Based on “Schwanensee” (“Swan lake”), the dance en pointe is mixed with contemporary elements.
“Centaures” (“Centaurs”) shows two human-like beings that – half human, half horse – battle with one another. They symbolize the possibility of a new beginning after a collapse.
“Still life” is a term from 17th century European painting. Vanitas motifs stand for the transience and the death. The temperamental group scenes and suggestive duos seem like live paintings.
Angelin Preljocaj was born in Sucy-en-Brie, close to Paris, in 1957. He studied classical and contemporary dance and was a dancer with Merce Cunningham and Dominique Bagouet from 1980 onwards. He founded his own company at Champigny-sur-Marne in 1985; since 2006, it has been headquartered in Aix-en-Provence under the name Ballet Preljocaj. Up until today, he has choreographed 52 dance pieces – from solos on up to grand ballets for his company as well as for major opera houses in Paris, Milan, New York and Berlin. At euro-scene Leipzig, he already was a guest with “Helikopter” (“Helicopter”) and “MC 14/22 (Ceci est mon corps)” in 2001 and with “Annonciation” (“Proclamation”) and “N” in 2005.
