Oratorio. A collective meditation on a well-kept secret

“Let it belong to those it is good for.”
Bertolt Brecht
Property changes consciousness, property divides friends, it bestows power over others, it excludes, limits participation. Property makes you crave more. Property is taken for granted. Nothing is more constitutive for our society, nothing divides our communities further, nothing determines its capitalist structures like the concept of property.
The chorus in ORATORIUM stands as a metaphor for a supposedly harmonious society. Following the Brechtian theory of the teaching play, both performers and spectators try on specific attitudes for size, reciting spontaneous as well as previously prepared and studied speeches. A murmured oratory, a shouted devotional, a sung soliloquy of a society pondering its property structures and the distortions that they produce. In speaking, this society takes stock and finds that it is at odds with itself.
She She Pop are a Berlin-based performance collective, most of its members are women. They see themselves as authors, dramaturgs and performers of the action on stage. She She Pop’s specific artistic interest lies in a targeted and artful transgression of social communication in the protective space of the theatre.
This residency includes a workshop of several days for local performers who will be featured as guest actors in the Leipzig version of ORATORIUM.
