Great news! Julian Hetzel’s “Drei Mal links ist rechts” (“Three times left is right”) has been invited to the 2026 Berlin Theatertreffen as a residency production. The performance, created in co-production with the Wiener Festwochen, has been selected by the festival jury as one of the “ten most remarkable productions” in the German-speaking world. We congratulate Julian Hetzel’s team on this outstanding accolade, which will be celebrated with a revival of the piece this season (April 2027).
And it is not only this invitation to the Theatertreffen that confirms the venue’s relevance, with its firm place between art and culture on the internationally renowned Spinnereigelände site. The Residenz is firmly established within Leipzig’s theatre landscape and far beyond, and is renowned for its artistic and conceptual profile, which is dedicated to contemporary performance highly popular with audiences. By linking the independent theatre scene to the municipal theatre, the Residenz is a unique model, and performance collectives value the opportunity to work on their projects on site during a production residency lasting several weeks.
This season, too, the Residenz invites you to experience performance art first-hand and to explore a whole range of possible forms of togetherness: the internationally acclaimed and charming NATURE THEATER OF OKLAHOMA eats pizza with the audience, sings songs to ward off spirits with a local choir, and explores the meaning of life with plenty of humour and aerobics. The Leipzig ballroom community TrueColours has been dedicated to community building since its inception; they place BiPoC/queer artists at the centre of their showcase and, in a panel discussion, offer insights into ballroom culture as a lived practice. No fewer than three collectives – George Bele, FARN and Bodenproben – are coming together for a project to practise saying goodbye and letting go, together with the audience. And whilst choreographer Eva Meyer-Keller, in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, offers a feminist perspective on evolutionary theories, vorschlag:hammer is developing a polyphonic production on childhood(s) based on biographical interviews the performance collective conducted with children from Leipzig, Zurich, Duisburg and Berlin.
In addition, Leipzig-based author and performer Martina Hefter will present her new novel on 17 October, accompanied by a band, and rumours are rife that the fabulous #BBF from Leipzig will once again warm our hearts this season with a wild surprise this winter. Last but not least, for the fourth edition of the “KATAPULT – Performance Platform Leipzig” project, Residenz Schauspiel Leipzig, Schaubühne Lindenfels and LOFFT – DAS THEATER are joining forces to offer the local performance scene a platform for a wide variety of performance formats on their own initiative. The presentation will form the grand finale of the 2026/27 season, and the three venues will celebrate a spectacular performance festival with the audience!
