Residenz at the old cotton mill in Plagwitz is Schauspiel Leipzig’s venue exclusively for independently produced projects and serves as a model for the German city theatre system. Artists and companies from the fields of performance, dance, theatre, visual art or music work on their projects in residencies spanning several weeks and perform the resulting productions here. The focus lies on collective working processes, on narratives without literary foundation material and on performative languages that are inextricably linked with the act of performance.
Residenz is a laboratory for experimental theatre forms, a production unit for open processes and a network hub connected to international coproduction contexts. Not least, Residenz is a place where experiences can be communicated in public. Following the performances, the working space of the artists becomes a communication venue for all guests. The dialogue between artists and audience is further intensified in public rehearsals, topical lectures and workshops.
With Residenz, Schauspiel Leipzig opens itself to the working processes and aesthetics of the independent scene and puts the city theatre’s resources at the disposal of independent productions.
