A mirror is a rather strange thing, Alice thinks to herself – it turns familiar things upside down, offering a glimpse into a second world where the backs of objects are visible, but not their fronts – and what might the house behind the mirror look like, in the places where the view through the small opening in the mirror frame cannot reach? Perhaps there is more to see if viewed from right up close to the smooth surface?
And – whoosh – the hard glass becomes translucent, and the curious girl finds herself on the other side. She ought to be used to bizarre adventures with twisted people, animals, and plants by now, having had quite a few strange experiences in Wonderland after all. But here, behind the mirrors, things just get stranger and stranger.
Not only are the books written in mirror writing – which is almost to expect – but time is also strangely twisted; memories move forwards instead of backwards, and anyone running for their life at top speed barely manages to stay in the same place. And then the whole mirror world seems to be playing a giant game of chess with itself, in which Alice is unceremoniously deployed as a pawn. Alice converses with queens, encounters inventive knights, eternally quarrelling siblings, a few acquaintances from other adventures, and, last but not least, a large talking egg that commands the language at its every word.
In 1872, seven years after the bestseller “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, the Oxford mathematics lecturer Charles L. Dodgson wrote the second volume, “Through the Looking-Glass”, under the now world-famous pseudonym Lewis Carroll. Far more than a sequel, the story transports us to a world full of paradoxes, logical and philosophical puzzles, and charming, eccentric characters.
Stephan Beer and Georg Burger, who have been a fixture in the Schauspiel Leipzig programme as a directing and writing duo since 2014, are now back with their ninth production, shedding light on one of the greatest figures in children’s and world literature from her unjustly lesser-known (mirror) side.
