Songs of We
In the 2026/27 season, we will be continuing our season’s theme, “Songs of We”. The focus is on the question of ‘we’ – on social affiliations, conflicts, longings and contradictions.
On the Main Stage, we will open the season with a major two-part contemporary epic: “The Inheritance” by Matthew Lopez (directed by Enrico Lübbe), which explores the possibilities and demands of “we” in the present day. The second major production to grace the Main Stage at the start of the season is “The House of Bernarda Alba” by Federico García Lorca (directed by Salome Schneebeli). This will be followed in March by Anton Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya”, co-created by Enrico Lübbe and his long-standing set designer Etienne Pluss.
Stephan Beer and Georg Burger will once again stage a family play at Schauspiel Leipzig with “Alice Through the Looking-Glass” based on the novel by Lewis Carroll. With “Elegies – Black Box II”, the collaboration between the Leipzig Ballet and Schauspiel Leipzig will also continue on the Main Stage. At the end of the season, we invite you to a production that will make use of special and otherwise rarely accessible spaces within the theatre, guide you through the entire theatre, and once again present the whole ensemble: “Schöne Vorstellung” (Artistic Directors: Falk Rößler, Hubert Wild, Salome Schneebeli).
In 2027, the Diskothek venue will celebrate its tenth anniversary at its location in the former “Schauhaus” discotheque on the ring road. Wolfram Höll, who has already staged four world premieres at there, is writing another commissioned work for Schauspiel Leipzig: “OST”. The text spans a period from the 1930s to the present day and is directed by Thirza Bruncken. Marco Damghani will bring his own new text, “Der Riss”, to the stage, which is also being created as a commissioned work for Schauspiel Leipzig. The documentary theatre team of Regine Dura and Hans-Werner Kroesinger will present a new work that sets out in search of social cohesion and where and how is it created, discussed, and structured? Compania Sincara will also return to the Diskothek in a further collaborative project between Schaubühne Lindenfels and Schauspiel Leipzig.
“Drei Mal links ist rechts” (“Three times left is right”) by Julian Hetzel has been invited as a residency co-production to the 2026 Berlin Theatertreffen. This outstanding honour will be celebrated with a revival of the play in April 2027. New projects will be developed during the 2026/27 residency by: NATURE THEATER OF OKLAHOMA, TrueColours, vorschlag:hammer, Eva Meyer-Keller and FARN / George Bele / Bodenproben. The season will conclude with the fourth edition of the festival “KATAPULT – Performance Plattform Leipzig”, a joint project by Residenz Schauspiel Leipzig, Schaubühne Lindenfels and LOFFT – DAS THEATER aimed at promoting and connecting the local performance scene.
As Enrico Lübbe’s tenure as artistic director draws to a close, we look back at his track record of success: attendance figures rose steadily, reaching a record high of 83 per cent in 2025 – the highest in the theatre’s history. In addition, Schauspiel Leipzig has received more than 40 festival invitations over the past 13 years (including four productions at the Berliner Theatertreffen, ten world premieres at the Mülheimer Theatertage, and repeated invitations to the Autor:innentheatertage Berlin, the Heidelberger Stückemarkt, the Impulse Festival, the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen and the Venice Biennale). Added to this are prestigious awards such as the Martin Linzer Theatre Prize and the German Theatre Prize DER FAUST.
