A longing for America drives the protagonist of Giorgio Ferretti’s play into a state of restlessness. It’s not all that easy to describe America – and nobody knows whether it will be possible to find America one day. But the search seems to be many things at once: hopeful, desperate, painful, fulfilling and sensual.

Peter is a collier in the Black Forest, like his father and grandfather before him. He is plagued by the thought that everyone around him is “so inhumanly wealthy”, while he has to stay what he is. His ideas on how to change this state of affairs take an unexpected turn: He learns that as a Sunday’s Child, he is allowed to visit the glass-imp who lives deep inside the Black Forest. The glass-imp will grant him three wishes.

Chicago after the stock market crash: One crisis is followed by the next, and where can you make easy savings during an inflation? On vegetables. Even the ever-popular cauliflower is left on the shelves. Chicago’s greengrocers are desperate. Only yesterday they were well-known and confident as the world’s leading cauliflower grocers, today they have gone bankrupt.

Through the metaphor of a live competition and concert, including a commentator and a cheerleader, Miet Warlop invites us to form a community and lift each other up, as in a celebration. The temporary thus becomes the universal, and the personal becomes something of the collective.

“How do you say ‘colonization’ in Arabic?” – Based on this consideration, Salim Djaferi traces the history of Algeria’s colonization by France and its bloody transition to independence. On one side it is called the “Algerian War”, whereas on the other side “revolution”. A semantic (re-)search into the power of words!

Steven Cohen engages in a deeply moving ceremony in memory of his partner, the dancer Elu Kieser, who passed away after they had lived and worked together for 20 years. It is a cathartic gesture bound to a brave profession of faith in art as a ritual that celebrates life. Cohen invites the public to celebrate love with him, and to enter into a dialogue with death.

The five women who form the rock band Dakh Daughters – the most famous of all Kyiv artists currently living in exile in France – sing in different languages about political self-determination, their country’s complexity and against Putin’s war of aggression. In their rousing music-theatrical performance, vocals, cello, accordion, guitar, double bass and percussion form an exploding musical poem with a political message, thereby becoming an act of resistance. Without a doubt, their star, which rose long before the war, will far outlast this period of darkness.

Collective Ma’louba (Syria / Germany)
Follow-up discussion
Two Syrian actors come to rehearsals with text fragments, historical documents and personal memories. They puzzle over what their story is about. The documents deal with the true and shocking story of the Nazi criminal Alois Brunner, who was able to go into hiding unmolested in the young Federal Republic of Germany before absconding to Damascus in 1954. Protected by the regime there, he participated in building up its brutal secret service.

Tânia Carvalho (Portugal)
Tânia Carvalho is one of the most dazzling representatives of the current Portuguese dance scene. With her newly invented Expressionism, which crosses the borders between cultures and epochs, she has long been a fixture in Europe. The seven dancers, physical incarnations of controlled oneirism or nocturnal jugglers appear as if the painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder personally linked them to Carvalho’s dreams.

It’s not always easy being a child, especially when you have to move. At least that is what Virginia and her brothers Idaho and Washington think. After their mother’s death, they have moved to a Scottish county with their father, to inhabit an old castle and start a new life. The fact that an old spectre known by the name of Sir Simon was included in the purchase is poor comfort.
