Is this really a good idea? To compensate the loss of your wife by packing up your new-born daughter and the old grandmother and to escape from the city’s plains into high mountain regions, the origins of the lost loved one? To escape towards mourning, as it were?

It’s not always easy being a child, especially when you have to move. At least that is what Virginia and her brothers Idaho and Washington think. After their mother’s death, they have moved to a Scottish county with their father, to inhabit an old castle and start a new life. The fact that an old spectre known by the name of Sir Simon was included in the purchase is poor comfort.

Ann works in the department for beautiful buttons. Only the most exquisite products are sold here – a secure job in difficult times. But what is that noise behind the wall? What does it mean? When a colleague no longer shows up for work, Ann begins to ask questions – and is caught up in a nightmarish maelstrom of new dangers. An oppressive psycho-horror about power and powerlessness and the exploitability of human beings.

“On and on. On and on.” Life is a roundabout, constantly spinning. A person approaches here, words drift by there, lights, voices. For Woyzeck, life’s spinning only ever passes him by. “I think if we ever got to heaven, we'd have to help with the thunder”, he says.

A longing for America drives the protagonist of Giorgio Ferretti’s play into a state of restlessness. It’s not all that easy to describe America – and nobody knows whether it will be possible to find America one day. But the search seems to be many things at once: hopeful, desperate, painful, fulfilling and sensual.
